Hitting Your Mark -film blocking

in person class

On a shoot, every day begins with the director and actors alone on set, to block the scene.
This will determine how the scene is to be staged and shot (physical movement; camera set-ups).
A good director will have a concept in mind for the block, but will encourage cast to develop it
into something better, and truer to their character, relationship, and situation.
This workshop will ask you, in pairs, to block a scene you have prepared, which will then be shot
in the morning in a master-shot, and in the afternoon in a shot-reverse shot.
Each pair will be given the same scene, but a different concept to work with.
The challenge is to find a way of allowing physical staging to enhance the scene, and make
the block work for different camera positions, while maintaining continuity.

Richard Kwietniowski has made internationally distributed feature films Love and Death on Long Island (John Hurt and Jason Priestley) and Owning Mahowny (Philip Seymour Hoffman and Minnie Driver), in addition to work for British TV and a number of acclaimed short films, including Alfalfa and Flames of Passion.
